Hype

Description:

This is a song that Sara Quin wrote and that appeared first on the album Under Feet Like Ours and then later on the album This Business of Art. Sara sings the lead vocals and Tegan sings the background vocals.

Lyrics:

Under Feet Like Ours version:

(Hype)

One time in your life

You’ve got the route in hand but the map is stuck

They said it’s not your fault the tires are tired

Then the camera moves and your driver’s been pulled

And I, I have always felt this

And I could never, I could never hear it (Hype)

So I turned it up and turned it on and turned it down

Always the volume, always the words

Review the press and tell it like it is

Your life is hype, your love is hype

And I, well I will clench my own fist

And I will always, I will always wait

You said, there’s more

There’s more than blood that beats through my heart

My hands, my feet

Stuck between my tongue and my teeth

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we only go forward

Two times in your life you will trace the edge

You will sink your toes in

Review my press and tell it like it is

My life is hype, my love is hype

And I, well I will clench my own fist

And I will always, I will always wait

You said, there’s more

There’s more than blood that beats through my heart

My hands, my feet

Stuck between my tongue and my teeth

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we only go forward

(Hype) We go forward {Hype}

{Hype} I’d wait up all night for you (Hype)

{Hype} I’d wait up all night for you (Hype)

I’d wait up and you will (Hype)

I’d wait up and you will (Hype)

(Hype) Wait for, wait for tomorrow

Wait for, wait for tomorrow

Wait for, wait for tomorrow

Wait for, wait for tomorrow {Wait for tomorrow}

Wait for, wait for tomorrow

Wait for, wait for tomorrow

(Wait for, wait for tomorrow)

{Wait for, wait for tomorrow} Wait for

{Wait for, wait for, wait for} Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow

(Wait for tomorrow)

(Wait for, wait for tomorrow)

Wait for tomorrow

This Business of Art version:

One time in your life

You’ve got the route in hand but the map is stuck

They said it’s not your fault the tires are tired

The camera moves and your driver’s been pulled

And I, well I have always felt this

And I could never, I could never hear it

So I turned it up and turned it on and turned it down

Always the volume, always the words

Review the press and tell it like it is

Your life is hype, your love is hype

And I, well I will clench my own fist

And I will always, I will always wait

Well there’s more, there’s more than blood

That beats through my heart

Well my hands and my feet

Stuck between my tongue and my teeth

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we only go forward

Two times in your life you will trace the edge

Sink your toes in

Review my press and tell it like it is

My life is hype, my love is hype

And I, well I will clench my own fist

And I will always, I will always wait

Well there’s more, there’s more than blood

That beats through my heart

Well my hands and my feet

Stuck between my tongue and my teeth

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we only go forward

(Hype, hype)

{Hype} I’d wait up all night for you

{Hype} I’d wait up all night for you

I’d wait up all night {I’d wait up, I’d wait up}

For you {I’d wait up, I’d wait up}

I’d wait up all night {I’d wait up, I’d wait up}

For you {I’d wait up, I’d wait up}

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we only go forward

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we only go forward

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

We don’t know so we wait for tomorrow

Extreme Essentials

Trivia and Quotes:

  • Sara said she wrote this song about how people hyped them up in the beginning of their career.

Interview from 2000:

Sara: I wrote Hype about… I don’t even know what I wrote it about, I hadn’t written in a long time, my whole entire writing career has been actual writing blocks since the beginning, so. I don’t ever feel like I’ve gone on a really good-

Tegan: When she writes a song it’s a bad thing, cause it means six months of her not writing.

Sara: Yeah, I have trouble with writing, I don’t know why. Hype I kind of wrote... I don’t know, fuck I don’t even know, I guess it’s sort of about, same sort of thing as Superstar, kind of like getting on a good wave and then not getting too high on yourself cause you can come back down, I guess, like you can- I don’t know, it was kind of like- And then not feeling bad about it either though, like I don’t- I think it’s about being strong and like no matter what’s going on and, it’s kind of like a strength song. When I started playing it, I really was like, it was a cool thing it’s like- it probably came from feeling like, everyone was always hyping us up and then we get there and the normal reaction for our first year of touring was like, people would come to the show and they’d be like ‘Wow, I heard a lot of shit about you guys, you guys are good but- I heard a lot of stuff’ like meaning like, we weren’t living up to the expectations, so. I kind of wrote that song meaning that, like people put so much on you and [Shrugs] they don’t think it’s cool, oh well, y’know.
