Garage Warz was a battle of the bands type competition that took place in Calgary. Sara and Tegan participated in this competition and would go on to win the whole thing. They participated in the semifinals of the competition on March 21, 1998 at the Wyckham House. After winning this they moved on to the finals which took place at Max Cafe + Bar on April 4, 1998. This is often credited as the event that first sparked their music career, as after they won this competition the local media took notice and they started to do interviews and more performances. Part of the prize for winning was studio time, which they used to record the Yellow Demo.
